Biography

Linda L. Nelson, age 60 of Parishville, NY passed away unexpectedly on January 29, 2010. She was pronounced dead at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 8, 2010 at 4pm at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Potsdam, NY with Rev. Christopher Brown celebrant. Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Home. Linda was born on July 29, 1949 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Harold T. Nelson Sr. and Rosita Sheahan. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School. She is survived by her brother Harold T. Nelson Jr. of Hawaii. She was an avid dog lover.
Linda’s education from the baccalaureate onward was at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her Master’s thesis was entitled “The Relations of the Yugoslav Government in Exile with the United States Government, 1941-1944”. Her areas of specialty were Modern Europe since 1715, southeastern Europe (Balkan states), women in the United States, and women in Russian literature. She was a PhD candidate in history at UC Santa Barbara, with a dissertation topic of “Nationalism and Gender Identity: The Bulgarian National Revival, Women’s Consciousness, Women’s Activism, 1840-1878.” During her studies, she received two Dissertation Research Grants and was named Research Scholar by a board of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Linda began teaching History for SUNY Potsdam in the Spring semester of 1999. Linda was a wonderfully flexible colleague, serving the Department of History through a variety of classes, and also occasionally advising students.
In addition to SUNY Potsdam, Linda held teaching positions at UC Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Moorpark College, Clarkson University, and Mississippi University for Women. During her graduate work at Santa Barbara, she was named Distinguished Teaching Assistant in the Film Studies Program. During her career, she made presentations at meetings of the Southwestern Social Science Association, the American Historical Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies, and she was a manuscript reviewer for the journal Balkanistica. Linda also shared her research findings at several campus events at higher education institutions. In 2000, she was organizer and co-presenter at a forum on our campus entitled “The Crisis in Kosovo.”
